AIDIT
Advancing International Co-operation and Developing Infrastructure for Targeted Screening of Prostate Cancer in Men with Genetic Predisposition.

Welcome. This section of the website has been developed to provide information for potential collaborators in the IMPACT study.

The IMPACT study, an international collaboration currently involving over 20 countries, is the first multi-national study to target individuals with an identified genetic alteration that is highly likely to confer an increased prostate cancer risk. It aims to identify and recruit 850 male BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers, and an equal number of controls (with a negative predictive BRCA1/2 genetic test), into a targeted screening programme for prostate cancer.

Goals

The AIDIT project ran from January 2006 - June 2007 and was funded under the EC Framework 6 Programme. The primary goal of the project was to help research teams working in genetics and urology from Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey (the Associated Candidate Countries, or ACCs), and from new member states of the EU, to participate in the IMPACT research study. The IMPACT consortium includes researchers from Europe, Asia, North America and Australia, and AIDIT aimed to connect expertise in all collaborating countries.

By expanding the IMPACT consortium to these new countries, AIDIT aimed to:

  • Benefit both the ACCs and the existing IMPACT consortium through the formation of networks and collaborations, allowing access to a range of international expertise otherwise unavailable.
  • Assist in the process of identifying and recruiting a sufficiently large population of male BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers to give statistically significant results, thereby giving confidence in future recommendations for targeted prostate cancer screening.
  • Raise awareness and improve clinical management of prostate cancer in each of these countries.
